The Kennedy Cancer Center in Washington Twp, NJ, has shown and continues to show a dedication to helping others by providing amazing services to the community with free programs for cancer patients and their caregivers.
I created, developed, and currently facilitate Art Discovery TM workshops at Kennedy since September 2009. Art Discovery TM Workshops are all about having fun, self empowerment, increasing healthy coping skills, and restoring hope.
The process of Art Discovery TM creates a safe environment for the release of life trauma such as cancer. Support for each other forms effortlessly as people share their life story as they paint. One amazing lady in my group expressed that the cancer in her body is like having naughty children in her classroom that require being validated and set on a healthier course. Her visual perception of the cancer as manageable helps her face the challenges of treatment and have solid hope during the process of her recovery.
It is my life mission to help others find a new definition of art – how it heals, restores, and helps reveal our authentic self and inner spark. This can be about breaking free and experiencing together the beauty of playfulness and joy in life. It can be about self discovery. Serenity through art transforms attitudes and habits that block imagination and courage through life’s obstacles, especially a cancer diagnosis.
“Your mind can focus on other thoughts other than worries.” “There is more to life than cancer.” “Calming, love the classes.” “Continue with projects like these because they are fun, help counter anxiety, and lend themselves to sharing with others.” “This great project lends itself to creativity and dealing with ones emotions” “Eileen is very creative and shows a great interest in helping others and shares a new enriching project every time.”
These comments from workshop participants affirm my commitment to help those with cancer through art.
