As an advocate for women’s wellness I am compelled to speak out against the recent news that Komen for the Cure has partnered with leading fracking company Baker Hughes in the “Doing Our Bit for the Cure” campaign.
Fracking companies use possible and known carcinogens, including benzene, formaldehyde, and sulfuric acid, by injecting them into the ground and environment during the fracking process. These chemicals have been linked to cancer, particularly leukemia and breast cancer. According to an article in Ecowatch, “Benzene exposure is known to induce breast cancer in laboratory animals and is modestly associated with breast cancer among women. But the best evidence we have for the benzene-breast cancer link comes from studies of young male workers exposed on the job. Male breast cancer is clearly linked to occupational exposure to benzene.” Some studies have also shown increased cancer rates in areas of oil and gas development.
So we should all ask, “What the FRACK with the Komen fracking drill bit?”
How can Komen be fighting to cure breast cancer when their taking money, $100,000 to be exact, from the very toxic source of what may be causing it in the first place? This is the most absurd, ludicrous pinkwashing campaign of all time. And a clear sign of where Komen really stands on fighting for the cure. Fight back with your wallet and consider this the next time you want to make a donation. The only way to end breast cancer is to prevent it in the first place. The Breast Cancer Fund is solely devoted to this mission: Prevention, and more worthy of our support.
